On 20 July 2023, the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) held its inaugural Interns’ Recognition Ceremony at the Carlos P. Romulo Library for ten student internship completers from Ateneo De Manila University and Ateneo De Zamboanga University.
FSI Director-General Ma. Teresita C. Daza delivered the opening remarks when she inspired the student completers by highlighting the value of the work they will undertake as they step into the workforce. To quote the Director-General, “It’s your work that will speak for you that will be your message. It may not speak loudly many times, and at times you will feel like you are not recognized, but ultimately, if you have consistency, honesty, and integrity, it will shine.”

Mr. Elmer James B. Labesores delivered a student’s address during the ceremony. He thanked the FSI for creating a learning environment full of unforgettable experiences. In his speech, he professed, “I know that every single intern here has their different realizations and new lessons that they gained during the internship. However, I know that we share one new perspective about the nature of the work, not just in FSI, but also government work. The lesson is: it can be hectic and stressful at times, yet if you are passionate about the work that you are doing, you can understand how it is an honor and privilege working for the government and the Filipino people.”
The event featured the awarding of Certificates of Appreciation and Certificates of Completion for the 200-hour Student Internship Program. The six-week internship program provided learning opportunities for the student interns. Eight (8) interns were assigned at the Center for International and Strategic Studies (CIRSS), the division that undertakes independent foreign policy research and two (2) at the Carlos P. Romulo School of Diplomacy (CPRSD). In CIRSS, interns were given specific research tasks; asked to help arrange and coordinate the Mabini Dialogue Series (MDS) as well as transcribe MDS sessions. In CPRSD, the two interns assisted in training facilitation of the Basic Course on Gender Equality, Diversity and Social Inclusion (BCGEDSI) and the Course on Climate Change (CCC).
Also in attendance were Acting Deputy Director-General Marichu C. Liwanag, Division Heads Mr. Edwin S. Estrada (CIRSS), Ms. Evelyn O. Katigbak (Officer-in-Charge, CPRSD), and Mr. Hope B. Tornilla (AFSD) along with FSI officers and staff. Ms. Jufranz Sweet K. Faustino, the Internship Coordinator of Ateneo de Zamboanga University, was also present at the event.
