To help our diplomats have a smooth transition in their foreign assignments, the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) implements a Pre-Departure Orientation Seminar (PDOS) for Foreign Service Personnel. FSI, through the Carlos P. Romulo School of Diplomacy-Functional and Transition Programs Section (CPRSD-FTPS), has been conducting the Course online since the pandemic hit in 2020.
FSI is tasked to provide a program to help prepare personnel of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) and other government agencies who are slated for assignment to Philippine embassies, missions, and consular posts abroad. These personnel are officially endorsed by their respectiveoffices to participate in the training program.
PDOS orients participants on the functions and operations of Foreign Service establishments. It also seeks to acquaint them with some of the more common types of challenges while posted overseas, at the same time equipping them with basic tools to respond more professionally to various situations at work.
The last implementation of the PDOS for 2021 was on 22 November – 07 December. This was the culmination of the five (5) batches of the course offered for the year: Batch 1 on 18-29 January; Batch2 on 12-23 April; Batch 3 on 19-30 July; and Batch 4 on 04-15 October.
FSI’s PDOS responds to the objective that Foreign Service personnel must be knowledgeable and well-rounded in projecting a positive image of the Philippines under the one country team approach and promote the country’s culture in their respective host countries. It stresses that all Philippine Foreign Service personnel, from the DFA and its partner agencies, carry out vital duties in the promotion of the country’s foreign policy.
