Director-General Carlos D. Sorreta has joined the Asia-Pacific Leadership Network on Nuclear Non-Proliferation and Disarmament (APLN) through the invitation of former Australian Foreign Minister Gareth Evans, the Convenor of the APLN.

The APLN is a broad-based advocacy group that seeks to energize public opinion and encourage high-level policymakers to address the real threats posed by nuclear weapons through a sustained focus on measures to contain, reduce and ultimately eliminate these weapons.

Director-General Sorreta has been involved in nuclear non-proliferation and disarmament issues for over two decades. He has represented the Philippines in every Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty Review Conference since 1995. He served as Vice-Chairman of the Committee on Disarmament and International Security (First Committee) of the United Nations General Assembly. He also served as the First Committee’s Rapporteur. He has been the Philippine Sherpa/Sous Sherpa in the Nuclear Security Summit Process. As Philippine Legal Counsel, Director-General Sorreta appeared before the International Court of Justice in the Advisory Opinion on the Legality of the Threat or Use of Nuclear Weapons. He has also participated in a number of high-level meetings on nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.

The current membership of the APLN is composed of political, diplomatic, and military leaders from 14 Asia Pacific countries, including several former prime ministers and foreign and defense ministers such as Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, UN Under-Secretary General Sha Zukang, Indonesian Foreign Minister Nur Hassan Wirajuda, and Japanese Foreign Minister Katsuya Okada.
