Prospects in Partnership: The Philippines and South Korea

Since the establishment of diplomatic ties on 3 March 1949, the relationship between the Philippines and South Korea has flourished. The Philippines was one of the first countries that extended diplomatic recognition to South Korea or the Republic of Korea. This was cemented with the Philippine government’s deployment of the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK) to help South Korea against the invasion of the communist North during the Korean War in the 1950s. The Foreign Service Institute (FSI) formally established ties of cooperation with the Diplomacy Academy of Turkey through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) which was signed by Mr. Carlos D. FSI Director Attends Regional Meeting in Tokyo

Mr. Carlos D. Sorreta (front row, right end) represented the Philippines in the 9th Annual Meeting of Deans and Directors of ASEAN+3 Diplomatic Training Institutions held in Tokyo, Japan, from 6 to 7 March 2014.

The event was hosted by the Foreign Service Training Institute of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan.

The meeting highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in diplomatic training and discussed various trends and issues on training for newly recruited, mid-career and senior diplomats, cross-cultural understanding, and the use of digital media in diplomacy.

FSI Foreign Language Program Holds Closing Ceremony

A total of 86 graduates from 7 foreign language courses marched on stage during the Foreign Language Program Closing Ceremony of the Foreign Service Institute (FSI) on 12 December 2013 at the Bulwagang Apolinario Mabini, Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) Building, Pasay City.

The ceremony was opened by FSI Executive Director Kadatuan P. Usop and was followed by the keynote message of Undersecretary for Administration Rafael E. Seguis, which was delivered by Executive Director Lilybeth R. Deapera of the Ocean Concerns Office.

The Foreign Service Institute was privileged to have Senator Leticia Ramos Shahani conduct a lecture for the junior diplomats attending the Foreign Service Officers’ Cadetship Course Batch XX on 24 June 2013. The lecture, entitled “Decision-Making in Foreign Policy Formulation,” falls under the ambit of the module on Foreign Policy, which seeks to discuss and examine thoroughly the interests and the positions of the Philippine government on various significant issues. Of specific interest is the decision making process in the formulation and challenges in implementing Philippine foreign policy. ….read more
