Since the establishment of diplomatic ties on 3 March 1949, the relationship between the Philippines and South Korea has flourished. The Philippines was one of the first countries that extended diplomatic recognition to South Korea or the Republic of Korea. This was cemented with the Philippine government’s deployment of the Philippine Expeditionary Force to Korea (PEFTOK) to help South Korea against the invasion of the communist North during the Korean War in the 1950s. The Foreign Service Institute, in collaboration with the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), launched on 25-27 November 2013 the “Skills Enhancement Series for the Philippine Close-in Liaison Officer”, which was designed in accordance with the instruction of the APEC-National Organizing Council (APEC-NOC) for the Philippine hosting in 2015, to address the need for trained liaison officers for this forthcoming international event.

The Foreign Service Institute was privileged to have Senator Leticia Ramos Shahani conduct a lecture for the junior diplomats attending the Foreign Service Officers’ Cadetship Course Batch XX on 24 June 2013. The lecture, entitled “Decision-Making in Foreign Policy Formulation,” falls under the ambit of the module on Foreign Policy, which seeks to discuss and examine thoroughly the interests and the positions of the Philippine government on various significant issues. 04 April 2013 — A Foreign Service Institute (FSI) delegation led by Director Ma. Angelina Sta. Catalina paid a working visit to the Institute of Foreign Affairs (IFA) of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Vientiane, Laos, from March 19 to 22.
